Alastair Tulloch Vetro Recruitment, Birthday
Vetro is 3 years old today! I don’t do this blogging thing very often, but I thought I would for this special occasion.
3 years ago today Alun (aka little spoon), and I (aka big spoon), sat down in an office above his dad’s dental surgery and put the wheels in motion for our dream of having our own recruitment business built around our values. It maybe sounds a bit corny, but this is how Vetro began.
Rewind a few months before and we were both stuck in a rut, working for a big corporate company where you are a very little cog in a very big machine, working ridiculously long hours, never seeing our families and having the dread of going back to work on Sunday evenings. We were both disillusioned with the recruitment sector that we once loved.
Alun made the first big decision to move from London back to Wales, where all his family lived. We decided that we should sit down and thrash some ideas about what we wanted our futures to look like. After a cooked breakfast and a few coffees in Frankie and Bennies on Newport road in Cardiff, it became apparent we both had the hunger, desire and passion to start our own recruitment business. We started with what was important to us, the Health and Social Care sectors, that we had always worked in. I had spent 12 years of my life working in these sectors and Alun nearly 10. We started with our mission statement:
“Vetro Recruitment's mission is to enhance the lives of people in Care and Education through the provision of the best quality vetted candidates in the market. We intend to be the most recommended supplier of Health, Social Care and Education staff in Wales and England.”
A big dream.... yes! But we like to dream big and this drives us on. The name Vetro (the Italian word for glass) was really important for us as it symbolises our values of honesty and transparency. Our name provides the foundations upon which we built our company – providing a clear and transparent recruitment process to our clients, candidates and employees.
So fast forward 3 years, Vetro is going by the power of 3 - We have 3 offices (Caerphilly, Liverpool and Southampton), 3 divisions (Care, Nursing and Education) and a 3 legged dog! We have also gained our Care Inspectorate Wales (CIS) registration and recruited a team of 20 amazing recruitment consultants and managers. We have 3 nurses employed by us, not because we are accident prone, but because we took the approach of recruiting people from the sectors we support.
Within our business we have Nurses, Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Registered Children’s Home Manager, a Regional Care Manager and Support Workers all working as Recruitment Consultants. The Vetro Recruitment team truly understands the challenges of our clients and candidates. They will regularly be out working shifts in times of need or to gain a better understanding of the schools, hospitals and service we support.
We have also found an amazing charity to support in BulliesOut. Giving back is important to the Vetro team and we have already raised well over £1000 by holding a pub quiz, keeping an office swear box, running the Cardiff 10k, organising bake sales and eating an entire out of date cheesecake for £110! (Well done Ross our Education Divisional Manager). We have even more events planned including Pump -Y-Fan (going up and down Pen-Y-Fan 5 times in a day), static none stop bike ride and fire walking to name a few.
All in all, the last three years have flown by. We are very proud of the company we are building, the team we have recruited, our dedicated clients and our skilled and passionate workers. We have 100’s of testimonials from our clients and candidates on the website, a 4.7-star rating on google and a 4.9-star rating on Facebook. The cherry on the cake has been our recent double win at the Regional Awards where we won “Recruitment Agency of the Year 2018” and the “Overall Business of the Year 2018”.
Thank you to everyone for their support over the last 3 years! Roll on the next 3 years…. Maybe the power of 6….. probably not a 6-legged dog though!
