Motor Vehicle Tutor

Location: Margate, United Kingdom

Job Overview

We are seeking an innovative and passionate Motor Vehicle Tutor to lead a brand-new course within our Specialist Post-16 College. The college is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable and disengaged young people with learning difficulties.

You will have a crucial role in delivering a holistic training service, combining vocational skills with essential life skills to prepare learners for employment, education, or training.

  • Reporting To: Deputy Headteacher / Head of College

  • Contract: Full-time (Term Time)

  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week (08:30 – 16:30, Monday to Friday). Full-time tutors are required to work 195 days per year (directed time).

Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Tutor, you are a motivational speaker, inspirer, and energiser who will broaden horizons and break down barriers to progression. This is an "all hands on deck" environment where you will need flexibility to assist in other areas when not teaching.

  • Curriculum Delivery: Assess, plan, and deliver motor vehicle mechanics skills, with embedded English and maths for all learners (individual or group basis).

  • Holistic Education: Design and deliver engaging sessions, including activities and projects, incorporating life skills, PSHE, personal development, and employability skills.

  • Learner-Centred Approach: Continually assess learners' needs, make necessary adjustments, and promote growth and self-confidence.

  • Mentoring: Develop a professional 'mentor' relationship with learners, maintaining appropriate and transparent boundaries.

  • Behaviour Management: Deal with challenging or inappropriate behaviour in a professional manner according to college guidelines. Lead by example as a good role model at all times.

  • External Relations: Promote the college to other companies and maintain excellent working relationships with other agencies and employers.

  • Administration: Maintain thorough, confidential, and up-to-date client records using cloud-based databases and Microsoft Office programmes.

Essential Knowledge, Qualifications, and Skills

  • Vocational Background: Experience and qualifications in the motor vehicle industry.

  • Teaching/Assessing: One or more relevant teaching qualifications (e.g., PTLLS or equivalent upwards, assessor award, Cert Ed, PGCE) OR the willingness to undertake additional training.

  • Core Education: Educated to GCSE standard, including A-C in maths and English or equivalent (Level 2 qualification or above in maths and English).

  • Attitude: Outgoing, friendly, and confident personality with a positive, 'glass half full' attitude and a passion for helping others. Must be empathetic, compassionate, patient, and non-judgemental.

  • Transport: Car owner and driver. Willingness to drive a 9-seater minibus is desirable.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience of teaching and assessing.

  • Experience of working with looked-after children/care leavers and an awareness of the additional barriers they face.

  • Experience of working with learners with learning difficulties and/or challenging behaviours.

Working Environment and Safeguarding

  • Safeguarding: All offers are subject to successful DBS checks and internal processes. The role holder will be expected to attend certified training in Child Protection, Physical Intervention, and Behavioural Management.

  • Innovation: We are looking for innovative ideas that steer away from traditional teaching methods and align with our learner-centred philosophy.
