Job Title: Residential Support Worker (Children’s Home)
Location: Exeter, Devon
Salary: £31,000 - £39,000 (including enhancements)
Job Description:
We are seeking a compassionate and committed Residential Support Worker to join our team and help maximise the potential capabilities of children in a residential setting. As a Residential Support Worker in City, County, Country, you will support choice, safety, engagement, and positive outcomes through person-centred care and consistent practice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support children to maximise their capabilities and make informed decisions where appropriate
- Provide choice wherever possible and enable children to have a voice
- Follow professional advice and known alternative communication strategies to support communication
- Work within each child’s bespoke, individualised package of care to achieve the best outcomes
- Plan and support children’s daily routines, keeping children safe and engaged throughout the day
- Ensure each child’s Placement Plan is followed and adhered to at all times
- Prompt and support education, maintaining each child’s attendance in education
- Ensure professional conduct, confidentiality, and adherence to policies, procedures, and risk assessments
- Follow duty rotas and participate in rolling rota arrangements to gain experience across working methods
- Respond appropriately to emergencies in line with company procedures
- Complete daily recording and required administrative tasks (e.g., daily journals, handover, medication, telephone enquiries)
- Maintain high cleanliness standards across communal areas and support bedroom cleanliness and life skills
- Be aware of fire prevention regulations and practise fire drills
- Demonstrate sensitivity and appropriate assertiveness in a pressured environment with diverse children and staff
- Meet physical, emotional, psychological, educational, recreational, and social needs through positive, supportive care
- Communicate positively, provide a safe and warm environment, and encourage learning and responsible attitudes
- Support appropriate contact and relationships between friends and family
- Use de-escalation appropriately and physically intervene only when behaviour becomes dangerous, following the correct PBS plan
- Ensure incident/accident and restraint forms are completed and passed to the Registered Manager within agreed timescales
- Raise serious issues or concerns with the Registered Manager or Senior Management
Requirements:
- Experience or understanding of residential childcare and safeguarding responsibilities
- Ability to follow Placement Plans, policies, procedures, and risk assessments consistently
- Strong communication skills and the ability to support children using alternative communication strategies
- Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and duty rotas (including rolling rota and sleep-in duties as required)
- Awareness of Health & Safety regulations and fire prevention practices
- Ability to support education and maintain engagement throughout the day
- Willingness to attend meetings and training as required, and flexibility in hours to meet service needs
- Ability to support children with transport when needed
